Closing off 2015
A quick glance in the rear view mirror before we press on with this awesome journey…
So that’s another year done! It doesn’t feel that long ago that we were looking back on 2014, and now it’s 2015’s turn!
We always thought 2014 was going to take some beating – but looking back on the last 12 months, I reckon we might have done it!
As the blog title suggests, we’re not going to share every event that happened in 2015 – we’d all be here for a while if we did! Instead, here are a few of the highlights of the year.
2015 got off to a pretty awesome start, in January, when we were announced as Sunset Island Radio’s No1 Worldwide Indie Band. The support from secular radio stations across the globe continues to blow us away. In the same month we topped the Sunset Island chart, 365 Radio Network bestowed their VIP Talent accolade upon us and also made us their ‘Band of the Day’, we were delighted to be interviewed on Chelmsford Radio (Chelmsford in Essex, UK being the home of radio) and we also had a host of reviews and blogs posted, including a feature in Latvian magazine, Take a Shot.
February heralded the release of ‘I Believe’, and the accompanying video. It might have taken a while to get there, but we reckon Josh did a pretty awesome job of the video. We appreciate the many late nights he spent editing – and the patience he exercised with a PC that didn’t want to work as fast as he did!
‘I Believe’ held the No1 spot of The Singrush chart for 3 consecutive weeks in February. In March the single took the No 6 spot on The Christian Rock Chart and was featured as ‘Hit Pick’ on Australia’s Hot 25 Countdown. Shortly after, Josh and Murray were invited in to the 96Five studio for a chat with the now legendary Liam Renton. As well as chatting with Liam, the guys played a couple of acoustic tracks - but more about that later…
The single continued to climb the Hot 25 chart, and reached the dizzy height of No 13. The song remained in the chart until the beginning of May, clocking up 10 weeks of Saturday night air play – not bad for an unsigned band huh?
In April we also heard that ‘Fighting on my head’ saw off over 70 other entries to make the final 10 artists in a competition to win a track mixed by the legendary producer Stuart Epps. In a live Loop Radio show on 27th April, Stuart commented on every track in the Top 10…and announced our track was No 7!
Loop Radio were a tremendous support to us – giving us air play and interviews as well as including us in their chart and making us Featured Artist of the week. We were really sorry to learn they had decided to call it a day at the end of April. We are so appreciative of the help they gave us in spreading our music and ministry further afield and wish them all the best for their future endeavours.
In May friend and reviewer of the band, Sam Lidicott posted an interview with the boys on his website and we played at ‘Against the Flow’ at the New Globe Theatre in Brisbane. It was here that we first met the amazing Noralyn who we would catch up with again later in the year. We also bumped into our old bandmate Iain Broadley with his band Maiden May…more about that later too!
June saw an interview with the good people at Exposed Vocals, and lots of writing and rehearsing for……July was back in the studio – and the recording of 2 new singles. We’ve mentioned before that we are really excited about releasing these bad boys to you! We’re just finalising plans for the video for the first song – and as Josh isn’t editing it, it shouldn’t be too long before we can share it with you!
August saw ‘I Believe’ as HD Music Promotions video of the week, our music added to a Florida radio station who later interviewed Josh and Murray, and the first of many appearances in the WNDY Radio Top 500 Indie Bands chart.
Also in August, Josh and Murray were joined at CYC Men’s Camp by their ‘bro with the fro’, Iain. It was so humbling and affirming to be approached by people we hadn’t met before telling us they had heard our music on various radio stations across Queensland and beyond.
September saw us reunite with Noralyn to play at Ric’s Bar in Brisbane. Iain was also at a musical ‘loose end’ at this point, and we were delighted to welcome him back on stage with us for this gig, and also our slot at the first ever ‘Moofest’ in Mooloolah the next day.
October saw Pete make the difficult decision to leave the band. As a new dad, Pete wanted to spend as much time as possible with his family. Whilst we were sorry to see him go, we completely understand and thank him wholeheartedly for his contribution to The Updraft Imperative.
Now that Josh and Murray had convinced him to return to The Updraft Imperative on a more permanent basis, Iain mentioned that the drummer from his previous band, Maiden May might be interested in filling the TUI drummer vacancy. A jam session was arranged, and on a Friday night in a warehouse in Brisbane, the ‘all new’ Updraft Imperative was born. Repairs to the warehouse roof are ongoing…
November saw ‘I Believe’ reach No.10 in the first ever Aussie Christian Song Countdown, hosted by Aussie Christian Gigs. We had our first gig with the new line up at New Hope in Brisbane, with our second gig a couple of weeks later with Carols at Mount Mee.
Which brings us neatly up to date in December.
We mentioned the acoustic tracks we played when we visited Liam at 96Five earlier. Seeing as it’s Christmas, we’re giving everyone on our mailing list and/or in our Facebook group, The Updrafters a free – yes free download of an acoustic version of ‘I Believe’. As you have just read – that track has been in and out of charts all over the world in 2015, so we thought it a fitting gift for you – our loyal supporters.
If you’re not already in The Updrafters, or on our mailing list – what better time to join…?
We’d just like to close this blog by saying a massive heartfelt Thank you! to everyone who has supported us in 2015. From the numerous radio stations across the world playing our music, to the bloggers, reviewers and DJs who have interviewed us, talked and typed about us, to YOU…the loyal and supportive friends who we are blessed to have along for the ride.
We can’t wait to share more new and exciting things in 2016 with you.
Josh, Murray, Iain & Danny (and Diane)
